The Upright Citizens Brigade Sketch Writing program offers aspiring writers and comedians the opportunity to develop and refine their own comedic voice.
From learning our philosophy of the Game of the scene in Sketch 101 to writing a sketch show in Sketch 301 or studying Writing for Late Night through our electives, students have the chance to follow their passions while collaborating with others in a supportive environment guided by expert instructors.
Students will come away from each class having written a number of sketches and a clearer understanding of the hidden structures within the most successful sketch comedy.

Our Training Center is based at the Franklin campus, home to the Franklin Theater, with additional classrooms available in Silverlake.

Our Training Center is located at the 14th Street campus, which includes the 14th Street Theater, with additional classrooms in Soho.

Sketch 101
This class introduces the UCB philosophy of sketch comedy, focusing on “the game” to write comedic scenes. Students will complete weekly assignments to transform funny ideas into entertaining sketches.

Sketch 201
Students refine their comedic voice through advanced techniques, creating sketches under tight deadlines. The class focuses on essential sketch elements, offering individual feedback and resulting in a personal sketch packet.

Students collaborate to write and produce an original sketch show for live performance. They gain insights into the rehearsal process and hands-on experience working with actors to bring the sketches to life.
